Sequel (kinda) alert! Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to reprise their I Know What You Did Last Summer roles in what would be the fourth movie in the franchise.

According to Deadline, the two actors are in talks with Sony, and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is signed on to direct. Robinson’s biggest credit to date is arguably co-writing Thor: Love and Thunder with Taika Waititi, and she’s also directed the upcoming Netflix comedy, Do Revenge, which stars Maya Hawke. Leah McKendrick will pen the script.

This won’t be the first or even second summer that Prinze and Hewitt’s characters realize someone is trying to murder them. The first movie, which came out in 1997 (pictured above), featured a group of kids who tried to cover up accidentally murdering someone only to have a killer start going after them a year later. The movie was a hit and spawned two additional features as well as a television series. The second film, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, also starred Hewitt and Prinze and came out a year after the first. The third direct-to-TV movie, however, did not see any of the original cast and came out in 2006.

In more recent history, there was a television series in the franchise that came out on Prime Video in 2021. That show, however, was canceled after one season, so this new potential film bringing Prinze and Hewitt back is the only known Summer-related project in the works.

We don’t have many details on the plot yet, although Deadline states that this will be a “passing of the torch” deal, where the decidedly middle-aged original cast gives a younger generation the gift of a homicidal maniac trying to kill them when the weather gets warm. Things are still in the early days for the project, so no news yet on if/when the film will go into production, much less scare its way onto a screen near you.
